Hersh maybe has not yet been wrong, but is hanging out there on Iran, to say the least. He is sure there is to be an attack, yet it is just as possible that he is being used by his sources for misdirection purposes. As US attack on Iran seems unlikely given that Iran, unlike Iraq, can defend itself.

I liked what Andrew Sullivan had to say – my first reaction to terror stories like that is disbelief, but the impulse throughout the American media and the public at large is to accept official pronouncements like that at face, even as they have every reason to lie and agitate.

  2. Except that Hersh is hardly parrotting the official pronouncements. I could be folks have planted a story with him, but usually his sources are folks inside the military or intelligence agencies that disagree with administration policies.

That Hersh is reporting on this shows that there’s a deep schism within the goverment.
