UPDATE: County Commissioner Results

by Jason Wiener

With provisionally cast ballots and hand-counted ballots, the final unofficial totals in the Democratic primary for Missoula County Commissioner are as follows:

Michele Landquist 6,943 (129)
Dennis Daneke 6,901 (83)
Jeff Patterson 4,232 (41)
Write-in 141 (4)

The number in parentheses is the number of votes picked up from provisional and hand-count ballots. Still, more than 7,000 ballots had no vote in this race.

Congratulations Michele. Best wishes to Dennis and Jeff.

  1. I can’t remember, Jason, but is that BCC vote close enough for a recount?

They must like you over there in the Elections Office – I called at 4:15 this afternoon and was sternly told that they wouldn’t have anything until 3 p.m. tomorrow.

No special treatment for me. I didn’t identify myself when I called.

As I understand it — based on MCA 13-16-201(a) — a losing candidate may request a recount if the margin in the race is less than one-quarter of one percent of votes cast. By my calculations that comes out to 45 votes by the most conservative measure (disregarding ballots cast but without votes for County Commissioner). So a recount at the county’s expense is possible, however it would have to be requested by a candidate in the position to claim, according to the statute, “that the candidate believes that a recount will change the result and that a recount of the votes for the office or nomination should be conducted.”

42 is the margin. It also the answer to the purpose of life, as I recall.

Jason, Not sure of the exact number, but its my understanding that the elections office made a goof, and counted 20 ballots twice. Which closed the gap even more, again not sure of the exact numbers, but I think its now within about 30 votes.
