McCain Admits He’s “Divorced from the Day-to-Day Challenges People Have”
September 13, 2008 in 2008 Election, John McCain
by jhwygirl
Poor presidential candidate John McCain. He doesn’t get the day-to-day challenges that are the reality for us Americans.
“Listen, mayors have the toughest job, I think, in America. It’s easy for me to go to Washington and, frankly, be somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have.”
And apparently being President of the United States, for him, is taking the easy way out?
Lovely.
But not surprising. With what? – 8 homes? 11 homes? – hell, even he doesn’t know….but yeah, it probably is hard for Republican presidential candidate John McCain to imagine the day-to-day challenges that are reality for 300,000,000+ Americans.
Vote accordingly, America.

And Democrats are learning to play the soundbite game as well as the Republicans. Good for them, bad for America.
September 14, 2008 at 11:03 am
Steve, you are one smug son of a bitch. Given that you are so much wiser and deeper that Democratic Party, its activists, its supporters, its bloggers, and everyone else, why don’t you just tell us what we should write?
Perhaps tell the American public your deep insight. If only we were all so connected with reality and possessed of your keen intellect, this nation would certainly be great once more.
September 14, 2008 at 11:13 am
Well, Republicans playing the soundbite game is good for them and bad for the country too. Especially when “Country First” translates as “Republican Ideology First.”
Though I don’t think that McCain’s self-inflicted wordage qualifies as a Democrat soundbite.
A good Democrat soundbite would be more on the lines of:
“If McCain thinks that mayors have the toughest job in America, then he hasn’t been out to the Country Club on Friday afternoons watching Chamber of Commerce members lobby America’s finest over prime rib and martinis.”

“…..then he hasn’t been out to the Country Club on Friday afternoons watching Chamber of Commerce members lobby America’s finest over prime rib and martinis.” JC
Just so I am clear, JC, since country clubs are such an insidious place, does this mean Pat and Carol Williams need to resign their Missoula Country Club memberships?
Though I am not a member, the last time I looked through the membership book, a large percentage of the names I recognized were Democrats. Also, many of those Democrats were also Chamber of Commerce members.
And while you are at it, you may want to advise Mayor Engen not to have dinner out there anymore least he be tempted to go off his great new diet with the offer of prime rib and martinis. To his credit, he is looking rather fit and trim now and we wouldn’t want any of those Democratic Chamber of Commerce lobbyists spoiling his hard work and dedication.

Hey if millionaire republicans can call Obama elitist, when they can’t even remember how many houses they have, then yeah, Democrats can take potshots at the Country Club Mayor/CofC sessions that go on. Even if they’re not a true representation of what goes on. Though I know of more than a few CofC/city decisions that have happened over a three martini lunch at the Country Club.
And you can shed your crocodile tears on thee. Republicans have had too many years of PC Democrat lightweight elections. It seems like every time a dem takes off the gloves and tries to fight like a republican, all the republicans come out of the woodwork with inane arguments like yours.
You can conflate scenarios all you want, but I doubt our good mayor (or Mayor Kadas before him) eats prime rib over martinis with the CofC at the Country Club. Now Bob Lovegrove, that’s an entirely different matter.
And resign their memberships? No, it’s good to keep them all in one place on friday afternoons. That way the working men and women know the streets will be safe as they make their way to the Union Clubs around the country, and conspire on how to overthrow the ruling elite during happy hour.
So whazza matter PoPo? Can’t take a punch? Watching republicans whine about the new Obama, and all the punches the rest of us are going to throw is going to be so much fun.
September 14, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Actually I am very happy with the line of attack you are taking JC. Keep it up, please.
All Democrats are poor disadvantaged blue collar workers who are just too darn polite to fight back and All Republicans are big business millionaire lobbyists who play dirty. Please!!!!!
The class warfare angle hasn’t worked for the Dems in the last two elections and I doubt it will get much traction in this one either. There are actually some very bright Dem strategists trying to move Obama in a different and possibly more effective line of attack. Check out Al Fromm and the DLC when you get a chance. While I don’t agree with everything they say, I respect a number of their positions and arguments. They seemed to have helped Bill Clinton get elected.
Fortunatly, for the Republicans, people like you help keep sucking Dems back into the old tired lines that lose the very people you are trying to reach.
And by the way, Bob Lovegrove passed away from brain cancer several years ago.
September 14, 2008 at 1:58 pm
One other point, before I forget, JC.
When I made the comment about resigning memberships, I was referring to Pat and Carol Williams. In case you don’t know who they are (do you live in Montana???) Pat served in the US House of Representatives for Montana as a Democrat from 1979 to 1997. Carol currently serves in Montana Senate District 47 and ran for Lieutenant Governor in 2000. Pat joined the Missoula Country Club right after he left office. I think his handicapp is in the single digits but I may be wrong on that.
One thing we do agree on is that Pat and Carol should continue to enjoy their MCC membership. While I may disagree with some of their political positions, they are warm and gracious people and deserve a well deserved place to enjoy a game of golf and a good meal.

My apologies for the initial comment. I’m not sure I retract the sentiment, but the tone (and placement) of the comment were certainly not ideal.
Back to the scintillating argument that Democrats are really elitist while Republicans cut taxes for the top 1% of Americans. :)
September 14, 2008 at 5:14 pm
“Now Bob Lovegrove, that’s an entirely different matter.”
He would have rather hike up to Lolo Peak or backpack the Bob than drink martinis at the CC. Oh, not possible, he was a Republican, right? Ya never knew him.
September 14, 2008 at 8:36 pm
You guys a make my point. When a dem makes unsubstantiated attacks on republicans, oh how awful it is. And lets bleed some of that over to our local dems. But when McCain is clueless about how the rest of the country lives, well, that’s ok.
I can make just as ignorant statements intentionally as the best republican. But the second a dem starts talking trash like a republican, everybody comes out of the woodwork to cry foul.
The DLC is going to bail out Obama? Hallelujah!
September 14, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Look you pre-oreodites have no appreciation for the legal issues going on here.
Laws are driving this situation with McCain.
I’m only pre-law right now, which all ambition and not as much insight.
Any non pre-law lawyer types want to chime in here for the team?
These people need it.
Thanks
Peace, Pre-

I hear John McCain is on the take from Big Oil.
That’s just what me and my friends have been talking about at recess.
He’s loaded like a spacecraft with PAC dollars from all the oil companies who want to kill the birds and turtles we learn about in school.
My teacher wears neat sandles with wool socks, and says oil companies used to pay russian ninjas to cut off the heads of baby turtles. They would sell them as jewerly at republican conventions in the United states.
September 15, 2008 at 5:51 pm
Haha! Did PoPo just praise the DLC???
It figures the only thing this troll likes is the corporatist side of the Democratic party!
September 15, 2008 at 6:07 pm
BTW, Walt Kelly is rolling his grave, you using that name.
September 16, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Finds interesting the pattern of 4and20 bloggers accusing anyone who disagrees with them, or presents a totally different view on a subject with any measure of creativity or sass as a “troll.” Ever think they may just not be trolls?
You guys really think there’s some conservative conspiracy to throw you guys off message? That’s a little narcicistic don’t you think?
They might just be people with different opinions. Stunning, I know.
Great way to encourage diverse discourse.
