Public Forum Wednesday Night for Sentinel Electronic Billboard Hearing
by jhwygirl
You remember? The one that student project coordinator Christina came by to defend? Don’t miss the comments on that one….
There’s also this post and this post – that last one, too, with lots of comments.
Or, you could check out Binky’s post at Bunk the West.
The thing is – if DECA or its teacher/advisor Mark Hartman really wanted to teach these kids a lesson of how it happens in the real world – how business leaders really have to do business, Mr. Hartman and friends would submit themselves to the real world review process like any other (instead of hiding behind state law) and see how it flies.
I mean – their going through this forum without having to meet any of the criteria of the real world variance standards. Namely – as goof pointed out – a hardship.
There’s no lesson being learned here. No business lesson, no leadership lesson, no civics lesson. Unless it’s that of an AIG banker.
Yeah – maybe that’s it. How to behave badly and get a bailout!
Shame on them. Really. This isn’t good leadership – by Hartman or those students – not good leadership by the school district or the school board – and not good citizenship and community on any of those people’s part.
Meeting is 7 p.m., at City Hall. Contact OPG for more information.

I don’t quite know how to define the “meeting” that DECA hosted at Sentinel last week. It was, I guess, framed in a way that the wider community could gather with the students and discuss the issue. In reality it was an odd format of the students giving a verbal presentation from the stage, then standing up there like they were on an awkward sort-of firing line; fielding questions and comments from supporters, concerned citizens, neighbors and Councilor Wilkins.
There was not anyone apparent taking notes or minutes; no sitting down around a table to really hash-it-out; and no real conclusion except that the students still were not clear about the location of the BOA meeting. Mr. Wilkins set them straight on that.
So, I’d expect any DECA report to the MCPS Board will be that they met with the Neighborhood Council and community members. Period. But how can they substantively respond or convey to the MCPS Board what it really meant to the community without someone taking minutes and addressing the concerns on paper?
Is this about the learning process? or the end game?
Let’s start calling it what it really is, it is not a sign; what they want is an ELECTRONIC BILLBOARD.

Thanks, SeenClearly, for your report of the meeting at Sentinel.
Others: Please see SeenClearly’s report from the BCPS public presentation of the DECA students.
Clearly they have no intention of actually listening.
Oh, the rambling I can do about that….
But again – how that is a learning experience is beyond me. If they are just raising money, why don’t they just sell cookies or something?

Sentinel’s Electronic Billboard proposal going to MCPS finance committee tonight; Feb. 3rd at 6pm, 915 South Av..
How wonderful that the public gets only 48 hours notice on this stuff….
Here’s the listing from the top of their agenda:
“Background Information: The marketing classes in conjunction with DECA has been working on a school sign project at Sentinel High School. Teacher Mark Harmon will provide information on this proposed project and requests Trustee approval. Administrative Recommendation: Discussion with possible recommendation for Trustee action at the February 10th Board meeting.”.

DECA and Sentinel High School reps had another forum in front of City Council PAZ committee yesterday. Not much notice from DECA on that one. As far as can be determined based on the loose MCPS public notice standards, the issue will be in front of the next MCPS Board of Trustees meeting.
—- Let the students do whatever they want in a neighborhood; but god-forbid don’t let them watch soft-core subversive media like the Story of Stuff ! … Incredible. —
Subvert the irrational, non-reality of the dominant paradigm. NO! Just keep extracting, spoiling, driving, marketing, consuming and wasting. Have we doomed our children and are now seeing them preparing to further doom themselves?
For those who don’t subscribe, here’s the cut/paste from Bob Jaffe’s city council committee listserve:
“In PAZ we started with a review of the sign proposal for Sentinel High School. The school is not subject to local zoning regulations so they can pretty much do whatever they want with their sign. Mr. Wilkins got wind of their proposal and how it was completely non-compliant with our regulations and started following the issue. He spoke with a number of the folks who live near the school and there was quite a bit of objection to the project. For some of us it is objectionable that a public entity would ignore the local regulations. The sign is a project of their marketing club and what sounded like their equivalent of ASUM.The item on the agenda today was to consider if we wanted to pass a resolution expressing the opinion of the council on the project to the school board. It turned out the thing was only a little offensive and didn’t cross the threshold to get the council to pursue a resolution. A few folks thought it was just fine. Of primary importance the school representatives indicated that they wanted to work with the community to make people happy. After much discussion and questions and answers Alex Apostle, the superintendant, made a really nice statement assuring us that they would work to make this a win win for the school and the community. He waited until everyone had spoken to say his piece. It was skillfully positioned to close the meeting on a positive note and leave us feeling assured that we had been heard and the school would be responsive to our concerns. This fine piece of diplomacy was lost on the marketing teacher and student representative who then continued to carry on defending their project and discounting the concerns expressed by council members. One lesson in marketing they need to work on is knowing when it is time to just keep your mouth shut and smile.”.
