I got an email today, titled as above. Won’t go into the details. What I will suggest is what came to mind as soon as I saw the subject on the email, and here it is:

    Here is what some had to say about the accuracy of Obama’s State of the Union address:

    President Obama peppered his State of the Union address to Congress and the nation with facts, which were mostly right but sometimes cherry-picked, strained or otherwise misleading.

    ■He said “there are about 2 million Americans working right now” because of last year’s stimulus bill. But his own economic advisers say the total could be as little as 1.5 million, and independent estimates range down to as low as 800,000.
    ■He quoted the Congressional Budget Office as saying health care legislation could “bring down the deficit by as much as $1 trillion” over the next 20 years. But CBO has made clear that’s a soft and uncertain estimate.
    ■He said that when he took office, the deficit already was projected to total $8 trillion over the next 10 years. But the estimate is from his own Office of Management and Budget; the CBO put the figure at trillions less.
    ■He said he believes a Supreme Court decision will allow foreign corporations to spend in U.S. elections. Perhaps so, but it actually did not address a law still on the books forbidding any foreign-based corporation from spending on electioneering here.

    OBAMA: “Starting in 2011, we are prepared to freeze government spending for three years. Spending related to our national security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security will not be affected. But all other discretionary government programs will. Like any cash-strapped family, we will work within a budget to invest in what we need and sacrifice what we don’t.”

    THE FACTS: The anticipated savings from this proposal would amount to less than 1 percent of the deficit – and that’s if the president can persuade Congress to go along.

      holy crap, pogo, are you telling me obama was less than truthful in his speech about the state of our union?

      if only the rhetoric about getting tough with wall street was true. but alas, just looking at bernanke wrong makes the DOW go down. and since democrats are political jellyfish preoccupied by their short term reelection prospects, there’s no way they’ll find the fortitude to bestow any regulatory teeth independent of big bank strong arming.

      it’s the job of the president to carry out this annual ritual of political manipulation because the american public prefers to hear and believe lies instead of facing uncomfortable truths.

      don’t feel the need to take cover, pogo, the shots aren’t at you.

      it’s just that your bullet point problems with the speech are not only unsurprising, but distracting.

      there are much bigger lies at play here, and to some degree we all have to take a little responsibility for ignoring them.
