Emergency Powers and Michigan
March 8, 2011 in Montana
by lizard
The governor of Michigan is trying to force through the legislature a bill that would establish emergency rule, LITERALLY. Gov. Snyder is seeking emergency powers that would enable him to 1) unilaterally declare a “financial emergency”, 2) disincorporate entire municipal governments, 3) dismiss elected officials with no replacement election to follow, 4) seize control of local civil services, 5) hand taxpayer money, services and POWERS to private, for-profit firms.
Rachel hits it hard, with help from Naomi Klein.
the fallout from their overreach deepens…

So – Egypt finally gets free from ‘emergency rule’, and now Michigan wants it? There has to be something unconstitutional about that. And if anyone is doubting now that Republicans constructed these deficits to get rid of programs they don’t like anyone, this should lay those doubts to rest.
March 9, 2011 at 8:35 am
Time to call them what they are, fascists. These are NOT nice people, nor are they Americans. They are NOT pretend fascists. They are the real deal. They are traitors. These people are out to hurt you and make you suffer. The sooner that normal people understand that, the better.
Here’s the problem. These same folks have been doing this around the world to other countries for a long time, particularly in Latin America. And it was evil. But evil done in the name of America was never considered evil by the American people, for HEY, we were Americans and incapable of evil! Yeah right.
Well, guess what. Evil done in the name of OUR country is sitll evil! And hence, we merrily elected evil fascists like bush and cheney to invade innocent countries just like Hitler did!
And now, the fascists who perfected their techniques around the globe are gonna try a little fascism on the home folks. For you see, they view this as their golden opportunity. It’s now or never for them.
And I know you hate to hear it, Lizard, but these fascists calling the shots are part of the exact SAME cabal that participated in our first coup, the Kennedy assassination! They’re still running the show! The bush and koch families were RIGHT IN there. (see jeb run. run, jeb, run.)
One must know who there enemy is. The Koch brothers OWN the Republican party. John Birch is now running the country, thanks to the Koch daddy who co-founded the Birch Society. And who nearly SINGLE HANDIDLY created the hate in Dallas! And it there’s any more anti-American outfit, I don’t know what it would be.
The ONLY difference between our fascists and those of Musolini is that these greedy bastards can’t even make the trains run on time! And that just might be their downfall.
(OK, you can delete this now)

I don’t disagree. the Shock Doctrine Naomi Klein described in her book is being employed domestically, and it’s incredibly disturbing to see this push go down state by state.
i really do think the fascist tendencies on the right are overplaying their hand, though. this insane push to dismantle the organizing/funding power of unions is aimed at obliterating the remnants of the left in this country, and it’s not going to work.
this is why the sellout of the democrats to the fascist tendencies of neoliberalism has been so destructive. it’s not surprising that the right would think this is the moment to deal a deathblow to their enemies in organized labor, because the left has been neutered by Obama and his Clinton redux team, and can no longer credibly claim to be legitimate opposition to the corporate agenda of the right.
March 9, 2011 at 6:55 pm
More insanity. Hmm. Wonder where THIS is coming from? It’s all national, down to every last talking point the teatards utter.

Lizard, I know that some consider this ancient history, but this to me is quite fascinating. If you have some free time, it’s worth a read in my humble estimation. Again, it’s important to know what we’re dealing with here. The paralells are quite impressive.

We need to update the acronym for our country to UCSA™:
The United Corporate States of America™
My corporation, ’tis of thee,
Sweet land of profits be,
To thee I pay;
Land where my CEOs died,
Land of the shareholders’ pride,
From every boardroom side
Let stock bells ring!

Has anybody here seen my old friend jon tester?
Can you tell me where he’s gone?
He inspired a lot of people,
But it seems the good they go wrong.
You know, I just looked around and he’s gone.
March 9, 2011 at 10:29 am
The “overreachers” were the state politicians that put WI into this mess to begin with.
Funny Maddow never mentions that WI has lost 140K jobs, has over a 11% budget shortfall, has seen a 4%+ decline in employment.
But hey, what does those numbers matter when ya got screaming spoiled children demanding more-I say give in to all their demands. Cost of living raises, 90% pensions, no cost health/dental/eye care, how ’bout full coverage for domestic partners?
Then reserve a U-Haul before they’re all gone.
March 9, 2011 at 10:34 am
Yeah, how much of your “overreach” was the product of the Bush admin and a collapsing economy? All of it.
The story hasn’t even ended, and the revisionistas are already rewriting history to their specs.
Just wait until the next election (and/or the recalls) BS. You’re going to see major pushback form the people of Wisconsin. You’re already seeing it in the recall drives that have gotten started.
March 9, 2011 at 10:41 am
That’s funny. When I finished typing the comment I went back to proof read it and inserted ‘”state” before the word “politicians”. Knowing full well some numbskull would throw Bush at me.
Took you about 5 minutes JC.
March 9, 2011 at 11:07 am
Well, then that makes your comment all the more stupid. The state reps were not responsible for the national tanking of the economy, which led, you know to the loss of 5% of the workforce.
And what happens when the nation loses 5% of its workforce? Tax collections go down–way down, and states lose income, and hence have budget problems.
Didn’t know you needed such a basic lesson in economics BS.
And here’s it’s corollary: if the GOP were to focus on jobs, instead of its obsession with moralizing about everything, then states wouldn’t have these budget problems.
WHich brings us back to liz’s point about MIchigan. The GOP and their corporate
handlersraiders leave no crisis unexploited. They’ve been on a 30 year push to run up the deficit as high as they can, so as to create a crisis such as today’s where they can take advantage of super-high unemployment (and attendant low tax collections) to push their ideological agenda.
March 9, 2011 at 1:42 pm
Really, then how come some states have weathered the storm, sometimes just a border away?

Ingrid, I’m beginning to think that you are a Koch sock puppet. Do they give you merit pay, dude?
http://thinkprogress.org/2011/03/09/koch-wikipedia-sock-puppet/
March 9, 2011 at 2:18 pm
So now you’re blaming the Mini Depression on the states?
Wow. Revisionism at its best.
And the state map shows similarity to California’s situation. Why don’t you crunch the data in the pdf that accompanies it and give us some enlightened analysis to match your rhetoric and answer your own question?
If’n you can, that is.
March 9, 2011 at 2:23 pm
Don’t have to. In the states where Dems and Unions are allowed to run wild their economies suck.
CA, RI, WI, IL, RI, NV, OR, MI, all have that in common.
March 9, 2011 at 10:39 pm
Swede-
You’re an idiot.
I work for a Community College in Oregon. The state has a big budget shortfall, so they responded by cutting the budget for all community colleges, including mine. The Union had no say in this. They can’t negotiate with the Legislature for a bigger piece of the pie.
What the Union DID have a say in was how the College was to deal with the shortfall which was predetermined by the legislature. They helped the non-Union College Administration construct a budget that cut benefits for all employees, and cut the jobs of as few employees as possible. This is because they had to negotiate with what they had. They couldn’t negotiate for more taxpayer dollars. Nor can any Union, anywhere.
Your understanding of this issue is based off of a pack of lies. You have no idea what you’re talking about.
March 10, 2011 at 9:42 am
Let me see. OR has a Dem gov., Dem senate, tie in house. They voted for Gore, Kerry and Obama. Your call Steve, blue state?
Average teachers salary (09) is $49k with generous bennies. Ranks 22nd in the nation.
Your little CC example is pathetic. Big picture, Blue State with large union influence.
March 9, 2011 at 3:23 pm
Oh, so the unions are responsible for the economic chaos we’re in the midst of, now are they?
Anything to deflect responsibility and accountability from the real culprits.
You’re feeding right nice into lizard’s theme here, yeppers you are.
March 9, 2011 at 4:36 pm
By involving themselves in incestuous relationships.
*Of the nearly $7 million labor unions have contributed to state candidates in Wisconsin over the last six election cycles, 93 cents of every dollar has gone to a Democrat.
Among educators, it’s 75 cents of every buck. For public employees, 73 cents.
The data compiled by the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign for the State Journal starkly illustrate why the high-stakes battle between Republican Gov. Scott Walker and labor unions over the last three weeks is about more than budget shortfalls and bargaining.*
March 9, 2011 at 4:45 pm

Oh Ingrid, it takes a REAL man to attack school marms, don’t it, cutie? Boy, who you gonna take on next, Ingrid? The girl scouts?? You people are pathetic. And yes, you’ve been outed for your overreach. Now, it’s pushback time. Better get you some koch money and call it a day. Like one Teamster in Wiscnonsin put it. “It’s a good thing he didn’t try this on us. It wouldn’t have been so peaceful!” And he’s right. Sometimes when you overreach, you get your pee pee wacked! Or your Kock brothers so to speak!
BTW, on a personal note, just HOW does destroying education benefit a moron like you? What could an imbecile POSSIBLY hope to get out of it? Be specific, Ingrid. I really wanna know.

I’m thinking “merit pay” would kick your a$$.
March 9, 2011 at 6:38 pm
I’m not a teacher, dufus. But hey, come to work with me some day and let’s see how long you last. I’m bettin’ you would be a one o’clock wonder. Hell, I’ll soon turn sixty and I’m bettin’ you couldn’t stay with me for four hours!
And we’ll pay you own your “merit”, such as it is! You see, you teacher haters are NOT the workhorses you think you are. Sweat much??? If you were, you would be making NOTHING on merit! Explain how I’m wrong.
March 10, 2011 at 2:06 pm
I’m thinking that if we had merit pay, we’d have no right wing. I’ve never seen such a collection of idiots, not even in the 1950′s.
March 10, 2011 at 12:35 pm
Jumpin’ JAYSUS, Ingrid. You guys actually DID it! Hell, I was being as ridiculous as I possibly could when I suggested that you morons would attack Girl Scouts next, and yet, you freakin’ ididiots actually DID it! How CAN I possibly come up with outlandish analogies to describe you folks now? I can’t. You win, dude. You win.

i would like to thank ingy the idiot for exemplifying how morally and mentally bankrupt people on the right can be.
these emergency measures are absolutely indefensible. no amount of demonizing unions will make these kind of extreme power grabs palatable to sane Americans.
March 9, 2011 at 6:20 pm
I’m not trying to be disagreeable. I’m just very jaded. So I have to ask. Are there enough “sane Americans” left to make a difference?
March 9, 2011 at 6:34 pm
That’s the sixty thousand dollar question for sure. I doubt it myself. I have seen no indication that the requisite critical thinking skills are nearly pervasive enough in a majority of the population. Add in ubiquitous propaganda and limitless distractions, coupled with an isolation born of never having to interact with your neighbors and fellow human beings, and absolutely NO sense of history, and we are basically just totally f*cked. I’m not optimistic, but I never give up hope. And New Zealand is looking better all the time. I’m thinkin’ if I sold the land and took my retirement, I just might make it yet!
Only suckers, fascists and fundis will be left in Murca in twenty years. Oops! Did I say Murca? I meant Kockland! Or New Kockland if you prefer. Or maybe Birchland!!

i think there are enough X,Y,Z generation young people who will shake off their apathy and cynicism and get involved, because it’s our children’s lives that are being sacrificed to line the pockets of bankers and corporate executives.
March 9, 2011 at 8:33 pm
Of course I pray God that you’re right, Lizard. I have grandchildren that I love dearly, and I’ll do whatEVER I can to insure a fighting chance at a decent future for them. You see, my wife and I spent a great deal of time raising them, so they are almost like our own children all over again. And THAT does indeed make a person willing to do what’s necessary and right for the future. To my last breath I wil fight the no good fascist bastards. HEY, it’ll soon be your world w/o me, so yeah, fight for it!
March 9, 2011 at 6:27 pm
Which power grabs are you referring to?
Elections that convey the voters will? Or the unrelenting power that the unions possessed thru forced contributions and back rooms deals.
And you’re a typical lib-humorless.
March 9, 2011 at 7:11 pm
i’m not going to tolerate comments mocking someone’s sexual orientation, ingy, and if you do it again in this thread you will lose your commenting privilege.
and if you don’t see how these emergency powers represent the kind of power grab dictators impose, then you are worse than the worthless tool you appear to be.
March 10, 2011 at 9:44 am
If my comment had been about Palin you would had let it stay.
March 10, 2011 at 10:11 am

As painful as all of this is, this is a war on democratic government, and it needs to be fought. They will not go away without a fight.
Beware of Democrats who want to lead this fight. They are not to be trusted.
March 10, 2011 at 2:13 pm
that’s cute, but a comment that makes a point about how the media reported on Tiger Woods affair isn’t the same thing as wondering what bathroom Rachel Maddow is going to use because she’s gay.
oh, and none of this has a goddamn thing to do about emergency powers and republican power grabs.
so, Ingy, quit trying to derail this thread with your stupid bullshit, or your comments will be deleted.
