Missoula Senator Sue Malek Supports Warrantless Use Government Drones

SB196 was heard on second reading today on the floor of the senate, having passed state senate judiciary on a 9-3 vote.
In a nutshell, the bill prohibits the use of drones by the government unless a warrant is issued or some other judicial process takes place. It also prohibits the use of information illegally obtained through the use of drones.
The bill, proposed by Glendive’s Sen. Matthew Rosendale, a Republican, received bipartisan support, passing second reading 29-19.
All of Missoula’s senators supported the bill – - except for Sue Malek – See her NO vote?
Who knew the Rattlesnake, East Missoula, Bonner and Clinton people were fine with warrantless government drones?
Crazy, huh?

Thanks for your post. The Rattlesnake…no bastion of thought/action cohesiveness, however, so no surprise regarding drones here. Our “Upper” and “Lower” Rattlesnake committees just met to discuss the aesthetics of the proposed sound barrier on the interstate. Hmmm…the 60 maple trees cut on Cherry and Poplar Streets by Conservation Lands Manager Morgan Valiant WERE my summer sound barrier…and a beautiful, oxygen-producing, yard-cooling job they did too. Three people protested this cutting (which continues). Nature writers and Ward 1 aldermen David Strohmaier and Jason Wiener were not among those three.

Hoping 4 and 20 might consider blogging-in on the following topic. A young high school senior, Yette Stein, with the help of other students, began a signature petition asking Missoula Superintendent Alex Apostle to return his recent raise. The petition gathered 1,950 ( I think ) signatures. The students just met with Dr. Apostle today and he told them he could not legally return the money because it was a contractual agreement. The kids asked him if he would, then, donate the money back. He said “No”. He told them their petition was “a survey without factual evidence.” I repeat: He told them their 1,950-signature petition was “a survey without factual evidence”. With the demise of the Missoula Independent (subsumed two years ago by advertisers) and the profound irrelevance of the staff-gutted Missoulian….someone needs to give these kids the hard-hitting press they deserve. Hope you might start that thread.

What’s with Christine Kaufman too? So SB 150 was a bill to prohibit aerial unmanned vehicles and SB 196 makes them get a warrant if unmanned vehicles are purchased by the state and police, right? More Democrats voted NO on SB 150 than this one. Still a puzzler. But spying on each other is now the new normal, so why I am really surprised.

Posse Comitatus is in tatters. Now we argue about warrants? What’s next?
