The Rocket to land in Houston?

Clemens to the Astros? Say it ain’t so, Rocket!

I’ll believe it when it hits the wires. Why would he do such a thing? Seriously? Who cares if the ‘Stros play in his home state. Houston sucks! It’s polluted. It’s dull. There are way too many conventions. The Bushes consider Houston their political capitol. The Texans. Ugh.

But Boston! La la! Now there’s a city and team to join! If I were Clemens, I’d pick the Sox in a heartbeat. In fact, I predicted it. So it’s got to happen! And why not? There’s the tradition. There’s the career full circle thing. Plus, with Clemens, the Sox would be the instant faves for the whole shebang! (Not so in Houston, dear readers.)

But…would I trade the Rocket for a US Senator from Big Sandy?

*gulp*

*gulp*

Let me get this straight. Would I deny the Boston Red Sox Roger Clemens and a clear shot at the title in exchange for a Jon Tester victory in the primary and general elections?

Is that the deal?

*gulp*

Um, okay. I guess that’s a fair trade. I mean the Sox just won in 2004, so it’s not like we really need to win it all this year. So. Okay. Sure.

Deal.

(*sigh*)

Update: Argh! It's hitting the wires! But only as a rumor…

Cincinnati was said to be interested in Clemens, and Paul Richards is also running for senate.

And anyway, one of these years Clemens is going to wake up old. He refuses to retire, so it will happen on the field.

  2. Yeah, I don’t quite get the whole Astros thing. I guess it comes down to the fact that he wants to (maybe) play with his son later in the season (in other words, Clemens signs with the Astros in exchange for his son being called up).

I’d LOVE to see him with the Sox, mostly because I hate the Yankees, but also because I have a sentimental spot for people going back to play for the teams they started with.

Jon Kruk had a good point about this situation yesterday. He’s worried that Clemens might be setting a dangerous precedent where veteran players will skip spring training and the meaningless early parts of the season just to return for the last few months. I think he’s got a pretty good point.

  3. The Rocket has already done it all, and I’m not sure why verteran players in the twilight of their career change teams at all. Can’t let it go? One more year in the sun? What do you suppose it is?

  4. I think it’s pretty easy to imagine why you’d keep going out there. He’s playing for a living. When he goes to work, 40,000 people chant his name. And don’t forget the money. You can never have too much, can you?

Interesting. But a “dangerous” precedent? I can see why players would want to do this, especially with the tougher new steroid rules. But I don’t think it’s dangerous. It’s good business for the clubs — they get the talent at a slight discount and know by June whether they need help — it’s good for the older players.

Of course it really really really stinks for fantasy baseball owners.

At the major league level, spring training is mostly for pitchers. Veterans feel they only have so many hits left in their bats, and those used in spring training are wasted and gone forever.

[…] Matt Singer called around…and is dizzy with excitement: seems like Tester’s kicking *ss. (Must…not…jinx…) He writes that a “week ago,” Tester-Morrison support was 1:1. We all know what happened to change things, don’t we? My vow was exactly one week ago! Voters across the state must have realized what a sacrifice I was willing to make and must have looked deep into their hearts… […]
