In case you were busy yesterday – oh, I don’t know – spending time with family and friends, the New York Times business section ran an article supporting universal health care in the United States.

Yup, that’s right. The business section calling for a single-payer system!

It’s all about the cost:

Countries with single-payer systems have long records of spending less on health care than the United States does. The United States spent an average of $6,102 a person on it in 2004, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, while Canada spent $3,165 a person, France $3,159, Australia $3,120 and Britain just $2,508.

Well, paying more is worth more if you get better health care, right?

At the same time, life expectancy in the United States, a broad measure of health, was slightly lower than it was in those other countries in 2004, the latest year for which complete figures are available. And the United States had a higher rate of infant mortality.

TAPPED’s Scott Lemieux has an excellent post about this article, too. The startling figure he posts it the amount of money our governments are paying, per capita, for health care:

United States $2745
France $2464
Canada $2215

Got that? Under a single-payer system, not only would everyone have insurance — better insurance, too — and it would be significantly cheaper than what you pay now, we’d also see a drop in taxes…

So…um…what’s the problem with health care reform?
