Welcome Missoula Independent readers

by jhwygirl

4&20 blackbirds got a shout-out from The Missoula Independent in this Thursday’s edition, in a brief short looking into the disappearance of Ward 6 candidate Lewie Schneller’s picture from the local Missoula GOP website along with his “I’m a Republican using a Labor Democrat label” campaign motto.

While I encourage a look around, here’s a link to the Lewie story, for your reading convenience.

  1. Ouch! Looks like someone ought to drink more coffee from that gigantic mug to his right.

  2. Lewie’s not alone:

It seems like Lewie Schneller is not the only non-candid City-Council candidate when it comes to party affiliation.

I’ve heard from several sources that when running for his current Ward Two City Council seat and asked about his political party affiliation in a previously-served term on Missoula’s City Council in the 1960’s Don Nicholson responded that he couldn’t remember which party he belonged to then.

In the context of last year’s Local Government Study Commission’s (LGSC) recommendations, he said, “I know there are some very deep feelings about partisan elections. I am opposed to changing from non-partisan elections. City government, of all governments, tends to deal with potholes, zoning, things that are not partisan. I am painfully aware that the Democratic Party is the dominant party in Missoula. I go around calling myself a Democrat, but I’m not a Progressive or New Party Democrat. I’m an older worker guy union Democrat. There aren’t many around any more.” (5/16/06 LGSC Minutes)

At another LGSC meeting the following evening he elaborated, “Partisanship elections, I’m personally disenfranchised with both parties. I”m a working guy blue-collar Democrat kind of guy. [He was actually a career executive in the paper industry – managing pulp mills on both coasts and in South America.] The progressives are over there, and the rich guys are over there, and I’m not anywhere. I think partisanship in city politics has no place. We deal with subdivisions, roads, sewers, potholes, curbs and sidewalks.” (5/17/06 LGSC Minutes)

Four days later Don offered a slightly different perspective saying, “I don’t view myself as a Republican or Democrat. If anything I’m a fiscal conservative independent and I try to stay on top of spending issues.” (6/21/06 LGSC Minutes)
