‘Twas the Squawk Before Christmas

by Rebecca Schmitz

Forget reindeer, eight tiny chickens will be leading Santa’s sleigh just in time for the holidays thanks to Missoula’s City Council:

Missoula City Council’s Public Safety and Health committee Wednesday morning approved the urban chicken ordinance, including an amendment to require annual $15 permits, sending the contentious proposal to the Council floor for a final vote Monday evening.

Now, Nicholson! Now, Hendrickson! Now, Kendall and Wilkins! On Reidy! On Rye! On Ballas and Childers! To move on to zoning, to move on to sprawl!  Now vote away!  Vote away!  Vote away all!

  1. I’m all for it. The more food we can avail ourselves to from local resources, the better.

Besides, I miss the sounds of life. How can someone not have a problem with horns and jake brakes, but take exception to the crowing of roosters?

    el oh el.

  2. Me too, Catnapping. I’m a big believer in Slow Food and local food movements across the United States. I don’t see how six hens are any more damaging to a neighborhood than folks with multiple dogs and cats, especially if they’re outdoor pets. I’ll take a bunch of chickens as next-door neighbors any day over five college guys and their three Labrador retrievers with groovy hemp collars.

Missoula’s proposed chicken ordinance specifically prohibits roosters, so any clucking the ladies produce would have a hard time competing with our town’s traffic noise.
