Another reason to dump Denny

by Pete Talbot

Erik Iverson, Rep. Denny Rehberg’s hatchet man and chairman of Montana’s Republican Party, has a guest column in today’s Missoulian.

In Montana, there probably isn’t a more divisive subject than guns and Iverson uses this wedge issue to attack Barack Obama.

” … Obama has shown that if elected president he will try to take away many of the freedoms we hold dear … ,” Iverson writes.

That’s rather a sweeping statement. So is the line that Obama will ” … arm the criminals and prevent law-abiding citizens from defending themselves.”

Looks like Iverson is taking a page out of the Karl Rove play book on smear tactics.

Obama has already stated that he’s a defender of the Second Amendment. And even if he has some concerns about concealed weapons, he’s not going to start chipping away at gun rights when he gets in office. He has a few other issues on his plate, thanks to the current administration: things like Iraq and Afghanistan, health care, and a recession.

I’ve haven’t seen any platform coming out of Obama’s campaign that would suggest an anti-gun stance. And also keep in mind that there are a few checks and balances in place. We have a Supreme Court that just ruled against the Washington, D.C., gun ban. There’s also a Congress that is loathe to advance any gun control legislation (the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007, which would re-up the expired 1994 assault weapon ban, is still languishing in Congress).

So why would Iverson hint that Obama wants to take away your guns? Because it’s a hot-button issue, like gay marriage or flag burning, that’s meant to distract voters from the lousy record that Republicans (i.e. Rehberg) have on the pressing issues of the day.

And why would getting rid of Rehberg help stem this flow of political sleaze? Because as Rehberg’s Chief of Staff, Iverson’s paycheck comes from Rehberg’s office (well, actually, the taxpayers).

Dump Denny and you shut down Iverson and his brand of gutter sniping, at least for awhile.

Mission accomplished.

I glad to see Obama is supporting both groups of hunters, the group who hunts durring the day in the rual areas, and the group that hunts in the night in the darken back alleys of our cities.

“In a 1996 questionnaire, Obama wrote that he “supported banning the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns.” He says now that the survey was filled out by an aide who misrepresented his views. Yet his record since then is consistent with that view. Never mind that Illinois and the other 49 states have a lot of two-legged predators.”

The above quote is from Investers Business Daily, 4/4/08

There’s a nice rebuttal to Iverson in today’s Missoulian:

“While critics try to distort his record, one thing is clear: Obama respects the rights and traditions of Montana’s sportsmen. He has repeatedly and consistently said that he has no intention of taking away our Second Amendment rights. Obama understands that the U.S. Constitution protects an individual’s right to possess and bear arms. And Obama realizes that Montana’s gun laws shouldn’t necessarily be the same as those in Chicago, where he served as a state senator. We all agree that we need to do what we can to prevent criminals from obtaining guns, and Obama will do this by working to ensure that illegal guns do not fall into the wrong hands. However, Montana residents who obtain firearms legally will see no changes in their traditional lifestyles.”

I saw that, too, JC, but didn’t get around to linking to it. Thanks for getting it up there.

Note who the writers of the letter are, they know a little something about this topic and they are all individuals that I respect.

  5. Big Swede

I’m glad the “gang of four” has come out to show Barry loves us duck hunters, it’s too bad he doesn’t like his constituents as much. 60K+ robberies, 63K+ Batteries, 20K+ assults, 20K burglaries, have happened in Chicago since last June 07. Yet Barry as a state senator refused to sign leg. to protect gun owners from protecting themselves in their homes. And he demonizes right to carry laws which are found in 40 states.

“I am not in favor of concealed weapons,” Obama said. “I think that creates a potential atmosphere where more innocent people could (get shot during) altercations.”

  6. Well said, Pete. This election is turning into a distraction. Hopefully my believes and ideals about our democratic system at 18-years of age will survive this pepper spray.

Are you familiar with Obama’s stance on gun control? Drop Denny and you prevent someone who may educate local voters about the positions held by a candidate that interest them. Because you may not like the fact that he is informing the community of the issues they care about is no good reason to try and persuade people from not re-electing Denny Rehberg. Good luck silencing everyone who doesn’t think like you.
