Just when you wanted to like Max

by Pete Talbot

Sen. Jon Tester voted the right way but Sen. Max Baucus didn’t on the FISA bill.

I was just starting to warm to Max after his work on the sale of Plum Creek lands to conservation groups and his effort to halt Medicare cuts, and then he votes to shred the Constitution in favor of big telecommunications.

(Unfortunately, Sen. Barack Obama also voted with Baucus to grant immunity to the phone companies that tapped U.S. citizens’ telephones. Sen. John McCain made a bold, leadership move and didn’t vote at all.)

Tell Sen. Tester thanks.  As for Sen. Baucus, the serious challenge from Bob Kelleher must have scared Max into voting with the Republicans.  And Sen. Obama, I’m disappointed.

  1. It’s interesting that Harry Reid voted Nay. Isn’t he the majority leader? Some majority leader. He couldn’t get 41 Senators in line to filibuster this thing? Maybe Sen. Feingold should be the majority leader. Well, Ben Franklin said it: “They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” It is a sad day for our kleptocracy.

  2. And how did our illustrious representative Rehberg vote?
