Various & Sundry for the Weekend

by jhwygirl

Zoos are being faced with the somewhat new dilemma of what to do with aging animals. Do apes go through menopause? Apparently. Can aging lemurs suffer from dementia? Don’t know. Does acupuncture help arthritic tapirs? Yep. At the Arizona-Sonara Desert Zoo, 22-year old sibling black bears Spike and his sister Missoula have been moved to a new enclosure with graded ramps and a sloping pool – they had been unable to access their 3rd floor den.

I was in Bend, but I missed this. Still had fun anyways…..Most of you probably caught this at the end of your 4th of July weekend, but Kent Couch’s feat deserves a mention. Kent attached 165 helium filled balloons to a lawn chair, armed himself with a BB gun and attached a gps unit to both himself and his chair and lifted off from Bend Oregon. He didn’t stop until he hit Idaho. His website has some neat maps, including some 3-D GoogleEarth maps.

John Lennon is probably rolling in his grave. A woman, Gail Renard, who participated in John and Yoko’s famous Bed-In for Peace, sold John’s handwritten lyrics to “Give Peace a Chance” in an auction at Christie’s for $833,654. John and written and recorded the song during the 1969 protest. It was the first solo work released by a Beatle.

I’d of thought it’d fetched more.

You were in Bend, eh? I’ll be “in Tumalo” for almost a week, jhwygirl. You dig, Tumalo, off Cline Falls Road? Really not directly IN the metropolis of Tumalo, but out by the BLM land.

And no, not at a golf resort, either.

    Love that sagebrush and juniper.

  2. Sneaking back to the hippie commune goof? I might have to drive back there to see that. :-)

Too individualist for that. But tipi? Yes. Working at the (Good Food Store maybe?), Yes.

Partying at the Palace Tavern? A whole lot. Bend now has a great downtown…gentrified, upscale, popular, new urbanist, progressive, but without my old low brow hippie hangout.

Saw Bob Dylan at the Old Mill development a couple of years ago, parked by the roundabout with the fish sculptures in the middle. But all my old buddies who worked in the logging industry, barely hanging on with their classic trucks wheezing up the Mckenzie or in from the Ochocos are long gone.

  4. Yep, interesting for a few reasons. The gansta-wannabe is a bit tedious, but cut through that and it looks like Bend is in the same denial as the rest of the a whole bunch of other places.

I’ve been telling people that I know want to buy or upgrade-sell-buy – WAIT…wait until, at the very least, until fall. Because this is selling season and sellers are going to hold on to the hope that they can get their asking price. And it isn’t going to happen and by fall there is going to be such a glut on the market and people are going to be so desperate because they’re carrying two mortgages that you’ll be able to pick something up at a much better price.

Me? I realized about a month or so ago that I’m going to wait until late winter (say March, April) next year – that is unless there’s something that can’t be passed up.

Given what is being predicted for interest rates, I’m sure I’ll be waiting.
