What is the weapon of choice? Guns.

Who is just one of the groups in opposition to HB228, Rep. Krayton Kerns’ gun bill that would eliminate the need for a concealed weapons permit? Advocates for victims of domestic and sexual violence.

In further lunacy, the current version of the bill makes it a crime to carry a concealed weapon only after it has been used to commit a criminal offense.

Forget about lunacy – how about ironic: In 2004 the legislature approved a bill that required a study of domestic violence and how to prevent it. The Montana Domestic Violence Fatality Review Commission just released its 2009 report.

This bill is scheduled for Senate Judiciary hearing tomorrow (Tuesday) at 9 a.m. If you haven’t emailed the committee yet (via secretary Pam Schindler –, you can call the Session Information Desk at 406-444-4800 to leave a message for the entire Senate Judiciary committee. Your message will be delivered directly to the legislators. The TTY (Telephone Device for the Deaf) number is 406-444-4462.

If you are emailing Pam, be sure to put the bill number in the email and request that she provide it to the committee as public comment on the bill.
