bears love wilderness. the more the merrier. can’t get enough of it. but some people do not love wilderness and they will probably temporarily prevail this year in the fight to give final protection to roadless lands in the west under the NREPA bill  HR980 currently being introduced and debated in congress. which is ok. the roadless lands are currently protected and will remain so thanks to an executive order signed in 2000 by president Bill Clinton. generally speaking, until congress acts the roadless lands in montana must remain protected in a primitive state. which is ok by me.

with each passing decade, these lands become more valuable as reservoirs of many diminishing resources including clean water and primitive recreation because humans will need these lands to provide a healthy escape from the overdevelopment of the other 95% of america.

with each decade, more wilderness haters retire or fade away completely and with each decade newer generations are born which value wilderness much more than their elders. wilderness designation for the majority of these lands  is inevitable politically and it is smart scientifically to protect these lands until our political will becomes smart enough to recognize their value.

we can wait the wilderness haters out. let them rant and rave. they become more irrelevant each day. wilderness will prevail. time is on our side. yes it is.

almost forgot to add that new west has a good post about the hearing last week with Brian Smith co- owner of Blackfoot River Brewing (Helena) testifying in favor of wilderness. next time you are in orange street food farm, please don’t forget to support his courage and vision by buying some great micro-brew. thanks.
