The Arrogance That is UM President George Dennison

by jhwygirl

King George is at it again – creating a new Vice President administrative position while hiking tuition and laying off and drastically reducing hours on 24 of the lowest wage earners in the university system.

Somewhere I hear blueprints being rolled out onto a heavy antique oak table as a golf course fades quietly into the bulldozers….

Does anyone have a spare effigy out there in the garage? It might come in handy – looks like it’s going to be chilly this weekend…..

This is one of those times I really wish I was skilled at photoshop.

  1. when i think about entrenched insulated arrogance on a world-class level i think about george dennison….

sure hope the poor chef’s whose hours were cut can find some toilet enhancing ingredient in george’s next plateful of banquet largesse….and please get someone to attach the clip on mic to george’s apparel so the guests can enjoy the result on the pa…..

  2. Lizard

wow, that goes beyond tone deaf. what a perfect microcosm of this country. cut back the labor, while continuing to bloat the upper strata. unbelievable.

when will the people in “upper management” realize they have to make sacrifices to? we’re experiencing a financial contraction bordering on depression, and george dennison does this? who has the authority to fire a university president? how does that process work, because it should be considered if this new administrative position is actually created.

jeezus, what an asshole. someone should take away a few of those really nice perks george gets, like the subsidized car, house, and plane trips.

  3. first off i don’t agree w/ the king regarding the VP position.

BUT, the folks whose hours were cut are ‘soft-money’ funded, their wages are paid by the catering jobs for camps, conferences and the like. I currently work for the U, and i’ve had one of those soft money funded positions, and i was well aware that if there was no work to do i wouldn’t get paid to sit around.

Regarding the tuition hike, there is no doubt that it sucks. BUT, while other institutions are hiking 5 (http://tinyurl.com/nvlxfw) and 9 percent (http://tinyurl.com/la3dsv), and making workers take unpaid leave, some requiring 5 days a month (http://tinyurl.com/nj2oh5), that’s 25 percent of someone’s paycheck, 3 percent isn’t the end of the world.

like i said i don’t support hiring more administrators at the U, but an accurate depiction of the entire situation is important.

    • What, Nick, makes your depiction more thorough? Montana did shore up university funding, and they actually got an increase in their budget. That is unlike what occurred elsewhere, in other states, like the example you cite.

I wonder what that salary is going to cost? I mean, I don’t know what King George’s salary is, but we know it is in the 6-digit range – a VP can’t be drastically far from at stratosphere. Gotta wonder how healthy those expense accounts are, too. Plus travel?

Wonder how many cafeteria workers that’d kept working.

      • like i said, i don’t agree with hiring more administrators. but does it make sense to pay workers when there is no work to be done? would it not be just as irresponsible to pay them to not work. I also agree that administrators make far too much money, i didn’t mean to sound like i was supporting the administrators.

If the University wasn’t hiring another administrator i think Dining Services would still cut back the hours due to a lack of summer work. a very similar thing happened last year although i can’t remember the details, i know that a lot of Dining Services folks were out of work during the summer.

Somebody should check out who paid for King George’s fancy million dollar(s) summer home on Lindberg Lake. With all the traveling that Bozo does it is a wonder he has time to hob nob with the elite up at Lindberg Lake.

  5. This is exactly the kind of thing that happens far too often in K-12 education as well. Even as teaching and other jobs are cut, new administrative positions manage to become vital.

I don’t think that most people are as hostile to education as they seem in Montana. Their real anger? Decisions like this, repeated ad nauseam.

  6. Robert Edelbert

Is this the same George Dennison that Jim Pittaway wrote about in “Shotgun Offense,” published in The American Conservative?

  7. one of oregon’s best players, cliff harris- was recently caught driving without a license, insurance or registration and oregon’s coach chip kelly didn’t hesitate to suspend him from the team the rest of the season.

meanwhile, the criminal enablers over at U of M like AD O’day maunder and discuss secretly behind closed doors.

what’s to discuss? these guys don’t deserve $50k a year room and board and education paid for by the taxpayers of montana..

suspend them now before sports illustrated comes out with another embarrassing expose…… how does the top ten disreputable football programs in america sound?

the behavior of many griz players the past five years should at least get U of M in the top three.

(remember i only swore off politics)
