Not-So-Everyday Missoula Heroes

by jhwygirl

I got slammed by some a while back for calling a woman who could have looked the other way a hero – a woman who could have looked the other way as is the tendency these days – a woman who essentially handed police a murder suspect.

Well, looks like there are two more everyday heroes around town – or at least visiting. A kidnapping attempt of 3 children at the Crossroads store near the Wye was thwarted when two men came to the assistance of two women who were attempting to stop the man from taking the car the children were sitting in.

Again – these two men could have continued on whatever it was they were doing, but instead, they stopped the man, wrestled him to the ground and held him there until police arrived. Turned out he had a gun. Concealed.

Don’t worry, Gary Marbut – I won’t go further…

…and he was drunk.

Ooops, sorry Mr. Marbut…

The two men go unnamed…but to whomever they are, they deserve a community THANK YOU.

I’m starting here at 4&20’s community: Thanks guys, whoever you are.

UPDATE: The Missoulians superlawandjusticereporter Tristan Scott reports that David Larson, the would-be kidnapper, had a permit to carry the handgun.

Had I been one of the women, I’d have wished I was armed. If I was called upon as a passerby to help, I’d have wished I was armed.

Kidnappers are a poor argument against conceal-and-carry. Clearly, he’s a kidnapper, kidnapping is illegal, and thus this jagoff is willing to break the law. Whether his gun is permitted or not doesn’t matter in the least.

As long as convicted kidnappers are on our streets, carrying legally or not, well then our government has no standing to bar law-abiding citizens from carrying the best tools available to keep our kids from being assaulted.

In other words, this piece does nothing to further any argument against Marbut. He’s clearly worthy of an arsenal of criticism but this isn’t part of it.

I seriously doubt either one of those women – or any man, for that matter – would have reached for their gun as that criminal was trying to steal that car. There was two babies and one toddler in there.

Guns do not prevent or solve every potential crime, despite what people like Marbut would want everyone to believe.

Again, whether or not either of these women would have had a pistol or would have had a desire, let alone chance, to use it is really beside the point. I’m only saying that governments should not have standing to ban law abiding citizens from carrying guns if that’s how they choose to protect their family from very bad men like this guy.

As you point out, armed and convicted kidnappers are attempting to kidnap children, and are unafraid of reaching for their piece when confronted by cops. I’m pretty confident that I would have been a more willing and effective samaritan had I been prepared to coerce him into stopping his kidnapping. Not sayin, just sayin.

I mean, you’re talking heroes here. Had a mom preemptively stopped this guy from running off with her kid before getting back out of prison in 10 years and, um, attempting to kidnap another kid, well clearly she’d be the hero, right? Were someone to be driving off with my daughter, well at least a weapon would save the kidnapper from a preferred but more tortuous response.

Kidnappers’ deaths at the hands of protective mothers cause me no lost sleep, but thinking about these ladies, sans-samaritan, helplessly watching their car drive away, kids in the back and stranger at the wheel, does.
