senator max baucus sat on his hands so long, nobody cares what he does with the health care reform bill in his committee now. talk to the republicans- don’t talk to the republicans. we don’t care anymore max. you are irrelevant now to the task at hand. president obama can take it from here now that you have given sufficient time for the health-haters to maul it around and weaken it for your campaign contributing big pharma and health insurance lobbyist friends/ex and present employees. thanks a lot for nothin’

and don’t bother calling a press conference now. we’ll just wait for president obama’s speech to find out what is happening, thanks. you’ve talked out of both sides of your mouth so much the reporters aren’t sure where to put the mic anymore and we don’t want to listen to your lies anymore.

oh, and thanks for the epic failure so we here in montana can all look like a bunch of bozos for electing you in the first place.

Bull trout are a threatened and endangered species.

Are irrigators exempt from complying from the Federal Endangered Species Act?

This stuff goes on every day. Irrigation diversion structures blocking main channels of important fisheries, large and small. No fish passage, no fish screens required.

In the lets-not-require-too-much-of-anyone mentality of Montana, it’s all voluntary.

In other words, rarely ever done.

MEPA? Schmepa.

Some of these structures are built and torn down every year. Others are effectively overflow dams, that are annually given the OK by an assortment of local and state agencies. I think even the Army Corp of Engineers exempts these from environmental review.

Kinda like how the EPA has been exempting carbon dioxide from regulations which was great for coal-fired plants.

I’ve asked – What is Montana without its rivers and streams?

We can champion our rivers and streams and fisheries – use that for selling Montana as a vacation spot in ads around the world – but if we are going to criticize FWP for shooting a Boone and Crockett record bighorn sheep for what it takes away from the citizens of Montana, we should be looking at the statewide unregulated takings of threatened and endangered bull trout from our public waterways.

Tourism is the fastest growing economic sector in Montana. Apparently fishing and our streams and rivers have nothing to do with it, author Norman Maclean not withstanding.

We can also sing songs and laud the tear-down of the Milltown dam – but with structures above it, on the Blackfoot, and another more permanent structure like it below, what in the hell are we celebrating? Really? I mean – think of all the fish tagging going on. Just where are they actually getting to? Where should they be able to get to?

This picture, below, of a diversion on the Clearwater river near its confluence with the Blackfoot – both bull trout fisheries. Maybe a better word instead of fisheries is habitat. It is put in place each year by using bulldozers in the river, and torn out each fall, again, by using bulldozers in the river.

Imagine the state of our fisheries if these things were required to provide both fish passage and fish screening.

Update: Here is the full text of Obama’s speech to schoolchildren.

From The Orlando Weekly BloggyTown:

Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer today released the following statement condemning President Obama’s use of taxpayer dollars to indoctrinate America’s children to his socialist agenda.

“As the father of four children, I am absolutely appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama’s socialist ideology. The idea that school children across our nation will be forced to watch the President justify his plans for government-run health care, banks, and automobile companies, increasing taxes on those who create jobs, and racking up more debt than any other President, is not only infuriating, but goes against beliefs of the majority of Americans, while bypassing American parents through an invasive abuse of power…

Democrats have no problem going against the majority of American people and usurping the rights of parents by sending Pied Piper Obama into the American classroom… to spread his liberal lies, indoctrinating American’s youngest children before they have a chance to decide for themselves.”

BloggyTown wraps up Greer’s comments succinctly:

“WHAT THE HOLY FUCK IS HE TALKING ABOUT?”

Letter From Ed Secretary Arne Duncan to School Principals:

At 12:00 p.m., Eastern Time (ET), September 8, 2009, President Barack Obama will deliver a national address to the students of America… During this special address, the president will speak directly to the nation’s children and youth about persisting and succeeding in school. The president will challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning…

This isn’t a policy speech.

From the LA Times:

“It’s hard to imagine anything more ridiculous than attacking the president of the United States for talking to students about the importance of getting a good education and being a good citizen,” said Kathy Miller, president of a statewide school monitoring group [in Texas]. “I wish our elected leaders were responsible enough to denounce this kind of wild-eyed paranoia. But the problem is too many of them are actually feeding this kind of nonsense — like when the governor flirts with secessionists and state Board of Education members say the president sympathizes with terrorists.”

Miller has identified precisely the process at work in the healthcare hysteria and, increasingly, elsewhere where the GOP thinks it can shove the Obama administration into a ditch. Republican officials such as the Florida state chairman are playing a dangerous game with an unhinged segment of public opinion that regards Obama not as an elected official with whom they disagree, but as an illegitimate usurper of the presidency.

That paranoid fantasy is what’s really behind the “birther” movement and the allegations that the president is — take your pick — a secret Marxist or a secret Muslim.

It’s the kind of fanciful anxiety that produces comments like this, posted on a conservative website this week: “Barack Obama and his left-wing Chicago machine regime are putting into place laws and institutions which will insure that there will never again be free elections in America.”

These are the people who are stockpiling ammunition and keeping their children at home next Tuesday.

I’m sure our local tinfoil mad hatters will weigh in shortly.

Update, 12:15pm: Ed Secretary Arne Duncan was on Face the Nation this morning talking about the controversy. His remarks are below the fold:
