all those tough talking republican legislators got their bills branded with a big @brianschweitzer veto today and high-tailed it out of town.  all that hate and rough talk about gays- down the tubes. all those plans to poison our streams with arsenic heap leach mines again – down in flames, all those big plans to keep montanans from enjoying a float down our rivers – high and dry. all their plans to defund planned parenthood and cut off the poor just because they were mean enough to try it is also headed for the brand.

so what have the GOP lawmakers accomplished besides alienate practically everyone in the state with their intransigence and their mean-spirited and oafish behavior? doesn’t look like a hell of a lot.

no new jobs to tout for out of work unemployed?  not that i can see.

so, just like the rustlers of old who got caught trying to get away, the GOP decided to high-tail it home for some R&R on their taxpayer subsidized farms and ranches. Guess they met sheriff schweitzer and his veto brand.

there’s a code of the west alright. it is a code that says we take care of our neighbors, help out those less well off than we are and that we work together when it is time to rebuild from a devastated economy. let’s all hope the republicans go home and talk to some montanans who are tired of their wild west antics and hate-filled speeches about what people do in their bedrooms and doctors offices and get busy actually helping workers in this state for a change instead of just pretending to by playing cowboy.

With President Obama’s speech on the budget and how to reduce the federal deficit hitting the headlines today, I thought I’d offer up a morsel of what the left has been thinking about in terms of deficit reduction and budgeting for people to consider as they ponder President Obama’s plan, and the right’s “Path to Prosperity” plan put forth by Rep. Ryan.

I’m not going to go into deep analysis or commentary about this yet, as I’ve just seen both–Obama’s and the House Progressive Caucus’ plans–but I thought it would be good for progressives to know that there is an alternative to Obama’s “balanced” approach to his left.

And I really don’t want to derail Pete’s nice sidelight on the WienerMobile!

Follow the jump to see the highlights of the People’s Budget, as put forth by the House Progressive Caucus.

(The Montana lefty blogosphere has been cranking out some great stuff, IMHO, on state and national budgets, and on eminent domain; and offering up some honest critiques of Montana Legislators and U.S. Senators and Congressmen on both sides of the aisle, to name but a few of the worthy posts of late.  And for the most part, the comments have been lively, thoughtful and informative.  But I need a break.  Hope you do, too.)

I’d opt for a colonoscopy rather than go to the Wal-Mart Superstore at the corner of Mullan and Reserve Streets.  So you know it was extremely important to me; the ‘it’ being the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile.

When I was a little kid in Madison, Wisc., home of Oscar Mayer, the Wienermobile was present at every major event.  There was a little person dressed as a chef who would hand out hot dogs and wiener whistles.  Those days are gone but new, scaled-down versions of the Wienermobile are criss-crossing the land.

The Wienermobile was in Missoula this past weekend.  I know you’re dying for the stats.  It’s a converted GM W4 series chassis with a fiberglass body and a four-speed automatic;  six litre, 350 Vortec 5700 V-8 engine;  60 mph in 24.81 sec.; miles per gallon are 18 downhill, five uphill.

Since I haven’t been offered an ambassadorship to Fiji or a slot on the Olympic table tennis team, I’d gladly take a Wienermobile driving job, except for the hanging out in Wal-Mart parking lots.

During these times of war, pestilence, retrogression and downright meanness, a diversion like the Wienermobile is just what I needed.
