Apparently, the Ends do Justify the Means

This come from an AP story featured in the Missoulian today:

The revelation that intelligence gleaned from the CIA’s so-called black sites helped kill bin Laden was seen as vindication for many intelligence officials who have been repeatedly investigated and criticized for their involvement in a program that involved the harshest interrogation methods in U.S. history.

“We got beat up for it, but those efforts led to this great day,” said Marty Martin, a retired CIA officer who for years led the hunt for bin Laden.

So fuck it… Let’s shred the constitution as long as it makes us feel safe and gives us petrol prices below $4 per gallon.

And if these black sites and torture are so successful, why didn’t we capture Osama and send him somewhere to be interigated?

Seriously, who says petrol in the USA?

  2. Ingemar Johansson

So, it’s a world wide constitution that applies to terrorists?

Although I appreciate the sentiment, CFS, you left out an important paragraph that was in the news story that you quoted in your post:

Mohammed did not reveal the names while being subjected to the simulated drowning technique known as waterboarding, former officials said. He identified them many months later under standard interrogation, they said, leaving it once again up for debate as to whether the harsh technique was a valuable tool or an unnecessarily violent tactic.

So, I like to think there’s still some introspection going on and that torture will not be seen as “the Ends Do Justify the Means.”

The report I heard (on NBC, I think) indicated that enhanced interrogation techniques used on the John Belushi look-alike back in 2005 yielded the information that a courier the CIA were interested in was on no great importance.

That’s what the tortured man told them.

Assuming he was lying, the CIA supposedly reached the conclusion that the courier was important, that he might be someone who could lead them to OBL.

But what if the tortured man had told them the opposite, that the courier WAS important? Then they would, of course, conclude that, yes, he was important. He might be someone who could lead them to OBL.

So, no matter what the tortured man told them, the interrogators would reach the same conclusion. Why would they do this? Could it be that their suspicions were based on other sources? Could their suspicions have come from information derived through conventional interrogation?

This whole exercise in covering Bush-Cheney’s butts and deflecting credit away from President Obama is pathetic. And the effort to defend torture is disgusting.

May I commend to your attention this piece from the GOS. Make sure to take the side trip to Marcy Wheeler’s piece.

Hey! Ever have a buddy that became Rocky Marciano after a few drinks in a bar? I have. Friends who couldn’t hold their liquor, and after a snootful just HAD to pick a fight with some big sucker who was just minding his own business! Then, after the big guy pounds the crap outta your friend for awhile, you must run over and attempt to rescue him!

That’s what happened here, folks. Nuthin’ more, nuthin’ less. There should have never BEEN a bin Laden! Our moronic leaders PICKED this unnecessary fight on behalf of AIPAC and Israel, AND big oil! Why? Why did we need a base in Saudi Arabia? Why? And why did we need to invade two totally INNOCENT countries and slaughter their citizens?

We didn’t. That freakin’ evil idiot bush and his dick, cheney STARTED a fight, and Obama had to go finish it. That’s all. And that’s what he did.

I took no joy in Osama’s death, just as I took no joy what-so-ever in extricating a moronic friend from a fight. It was just something that needed to be done. Don’t cheer Osama’s death. Rather, CONDEMN that evil bastards that picked the fight! Hell, Osama was an ALLY before he was an enemy! As was Saddam. As was Noriega! And on and on and on! When the CIA is running the country, what the hell do you expect!

After the first coup, the Kennedy assassination, it was game over in this country. Democracy was out the window, and all that was left was a facade. Well, now even THAT is nearly gone! (see Wis., Mich., Ohio, etc.) Once the cheering stops, the ONLY question that matters at all is what to do? What to do? WHAT TO DO? NOW!

  7. I would point to the heresy trials of the middle ages. How many people actually fornicated with the devil or used demons to bring the plague into their communities? And yet they confessed to it. This is dangerous in the business of intelligence gathering, because if your subject knows what you want them to say, that’s exactly what they’ll say.

Here is another good article on the subject from the CS Monitor
