Liz’s Weekend Poetry Series: Fall

by lizard

I don’t have a lot of time to put into this weekend’s LWPS, so I’m going to share something I wrote last weekend before heading up to Glacier NP.

I will say this: writing a seasonal poem is like traipsing across a minefield of cliches. That said, I’m pretty pleased with the result; this represents the near-conclusion of my year-long poetic project. I hope you enjoy it, and please be careful this weekend. There will be stupid drunk people everywhere. GO GRIZ!

the song of fall—
not a song, but a call
not a call, but a color
not a color, but a pattern of color
oranges, browns, and red
not the pumping red of life, but the draining red of decay
a transition; a hibernation
losing light from the brilliant summer shining of day
now the papery rubies of leaves consider
scattering themselves across the browning green
of grass
the song of fall not a song
but a lonely note of distress
emitting far from the toil of harvest
and severed from the ancient yield of soil
then thrown the farthest distance man could make
from the land of take
where the mad are said to adorn their skulls with tinfoil
O rude interruption of satellites
across night’s shimmering bed of stars!
where we will be looking up from: the ground of Glacier park
song of the wolf not a song
but a loud lament
a lonely howl man seems no longer capable of respecting
the song of take not a song
but a jingle
a hallucination of inexhaustibility
no hint of singular breath; of a unified heart
the song of fall not a song with an end
but a sound as part of a cycle
part of a dream
seed kept safe in the ground through the long
sleep of winter
waiting for the song
of spring
