Doing My Part To Save Capitalism

by lizard

As the EU totters on the precipice, and Germany gets smacked into submission, I would like to make some poetry-for-purchase suggestions because, you know, tis the season, and to keep this economic system from collapsing, we must all do our part. Here is mine.

Oh, and if you plan on buying online, I recommend Abe Books. Unlike local poet Chris Dombrowski, I have made no effort to seek an endorsement from Abe Books, but we all have a price, and mine just might be a few Jack Spicer first editions. Did I mention Abe Books is a great tool for finding rare books? (psst, Abe, call me later, okay?).

Poetry anthologies make great gifts, because there are so many of them out there tailored to different theme and interests, you can find that perfect collection for that perfect someone. Below the fold are a few of my recommendations. Happy F*$#ing Holidays!!!

  • For the history buff interested in a century of modern, war-torn turmoil, check out Against Forgetting:  Twentieth-Century Poetry of Witness, edited by Carolyn Forche.
  • For something more uplifting, New Directions has just released Birds, Beasts, and Seas:  Nature Poems from New Directions, edited by Jeffrey Yang.  The scope is ambitious for such a cute little book.
  • For a peek at emerging talent, I highly recommend Legitimate Dangers:  American Poets of the New Century, edited by Michael Dumanis and Cate Marvin. My generation, out there doing good work.
  • For a definitive collection of the American Poetry scene of last century, The Voice That Is Great Within Us, edited by Hayden Carruth, is a must have.  I got my copy from a raving old UM professor who got fired for losing it in class.
  • For the subversive on your Christmas list, I recommend The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry, edited by Alan Kaufman.
  • For those who enjoy “regional” writing, the west is on the rise with two great anthologies.  One, published just north of us by Many Voices Press, is titled New Poets of the American West, edited by Lowell Jaeger.  The other one is titled West of 98:  Living and Writing the New American West, edited by Lynn Stegner and Russell Rowland. I just got that one last week, and already have enjoyed reading Jim Harrison and Susan Sonnenberg’s contributions.

And remember, if you’re not shopping virtually at Abe Books, shop local. Shakespeare & Co. is my favorite place to go for new titles.

Best comment on the Hicks Vid.

“I wonder how the people attending this show found out about it? Did they just happen to be in the theater by accident? Or was there some marketing involved to tell people Bill Hicks was in town?”

No appreciation. Maybe we need to go back in time when you carried your pots and pans on the back of donkeys.
