James Conner’s Flathead Memo Jumps on ‘Genocide in Gaza’ Bandwagon

“If Hamas continues fighting, then Israel has the right, need, and duty to destroy Hamas.” — James Conner, Flathead Memo

I find no joy in a tit-for-tat mudslinging blog war with other bloggers, but it is hard to let this one go. After labeling me a hysteric, a conspiracy sunflower sniffer, and a hater of our country, James Conner in his 4&20 eviction notice referenced his “good conscience” in shunning us.

How surprising it was then to read today Conner’s call for the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Hamas! I wonder how his conscience manages to keep up with that level of cognitive dissonance?

It’s really pretty simple: Hamas is a political party that leads the Palestinian Legislative Council. They represent 74 of the 132  seats on the council. They have millions of supporters. It has three wings: political; military; and social.

Calling for their destruction would be like… al Qaeda calling for the destruction of Democrats, and all that entails: Congress, the White House & Pentagon, all those who voted for and identify as Democrat; liberal charities and foundations. Maybe millions of innocent bystanders — civilians who think they are just going about everyday life trying to survive.

Or maybe Conner is just calling for a surgical strike of the Hamas military and political operations. Maybe assassinate political bureau chief Khaled Meshal. Good luck with all that — it’ll definitely ignite the Third Intifada.

Hamas represents the 1.82 million people in the Gaza strip. How many Palestinians does Conner propose we kill? And if we kill off Hamas and all of its supporters, who will be left in Gaza and who will tend to them? Or should Gaza cease to exist as an apartheid-like Palestinian refugee camp and just be another extension of the 1948 Nakba?

And who is to say who is ultimately responsible for the continuation of hostilities that go back over a century? Today’s Hamas rockets are a result of yesterday’s Israeli bombs, which were a result of last week’s Hamas kidnappings, which were the result of the week before’s Israeli…??? This crazy feedback-loop has to stop. And peace negotiations need to begin without any preconditions, or determining who gets the last bombing in.

Here’s a Wikipedia excerpt about the social welfare activities of Hamas:

“Hamas is popular among Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, though it also has a following in the West Bank, and to a lesser extent in other Middle Eastern countries. Its popularity stems in part from its welfare wing providing social services to Palestinians in the occupied territories… Israeli scholar Reuven Paz estimates that 90% of Hamas activities revolve around “social, welfare, cultural, and educational activities”. Social services include running relief programs and funding schools, orphanages, mosques, healthcare clinics, soup kitchens, and sports leagues.

In particular, Hamas funded health services where people could receive free or inexpensive medical treatment. Hamas greatly contributed to the health sector, and facilitated hospital and physician services in the Palestinian territory…

Hamas has funded education and built Islamic charities, libraries, mosques and education centers for women. They also built nurseries, kindergartens and supervised religious schools that provide free meals to children. When children attend their schools and mosques, parents are required to sign oaths of allegiance. Refugees, as well as those left without homes, are able to claim financial and technical assistance from Hamas…

Despite building materials needing to be smuggled into the territory, luxury beach resorts and tourist facilities operated by the interior ministry have been constructed by Hamas government–linked charities, including gardens, playgrounds, football fields, a zoo and restaurants aimed to provide employment and low cost entertainment for citizens.”

genocideI wouldn’t be so harsh about this if it weren’t for the news rolling around the internet today about the call for Palestinian genocide by an op-ed writer in the Times of Israel. While the publication quickly pulled the “When Genocide is Permissible” story and issued an apology, the message quickly got out and was reflected all over the internet. And it takes little for those with latent hair-trigger hatred of Palestinians to react and amplify an already explosive situation.

It doesn’t take much instigation by reactionary Zionists to quickly get the blogosphere all riled up, and get folks like Connor to quickly fall into the “blame Hamas and take them out at all costs if they don’t surrender” crowd. Here’s the language in the op-ed that has called the masses to rise up and push for the genocide of Hamas and Palestinians:

“We are at war with an enemy whose charter calls for the annihilation of our people. Nothing, then, can be considered disproportionate when we are fighting for our very right to live…

Hamas has stated forthrightly that it idealizes death as much as Israel celebrates life. What other way then is there to deal with an enemy of this nature other than obliterate them completely?

… I will conclude with a question for all the humanitarians out there. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clearly stated at the outset of this incursion that his objective is to restore a sustainable quiet for the citizens of Israel. We have already established that it is the responsibility of every government to ensure the safety and security of its people. If political leaders and military experts determine that the only way to achieve its goal of sustaining quiet is through genocide is it then permissible to achieve those responsible goals?”

Apparently Conner has answered the “is genocide then permissible” question in the affirmative. I would answer in the negatory. And the op-ed author’s hypocrisy of calling for a people who he says “celebrates life” to commit genocide is mindless and ruthless.

I for one am glad we’ve been cleansed from Conner’s Flathead Memo blogroll.

  1. lizard19

disgusting. I’m afraid people are only going to get more vicious as unjustifiable acts get mashed by their warped minds into a necessary genocide.

  2. Big Swede

James knows that the ultimate goal of Hamas is the extermination of Israel and the Jews.

Are you guys aware that Palis in Israel can and do prosper, they also can vote and hold office? If the goal is genocide why aren’t they being slaughtered?

Divide and conquer, divide and conquer.

“Not only would such cooperation on missile defense counter a tangible physical threat to Israel’s survival, but it would broaden Israel’s base of support among many in the United States Congress who may know little about Israel, but care very much about missile defense. Such broad support could be helpful in the effort to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.” -The Study Group on “A New Israeli Strategy Toward 2000:

Oh, now I remember!? It’s all according to plan.

  4. steve kelly

Nice segue Swede. Ya’ gotta’ love it.

MEMRI: “Based in Washington, DC with branch offices in Jerusalem, Berlin, London, Rome, Shanghai, Baghdad, and Tokyo, MEMRI was founded in 1998 by Yigal Carmon and Meyrav Wurmser. Wurmser, who later left MEMRI, is an Israeli-born American scholar of the Arab world. She is also a Senior Fellow at the US think tank, the Hudson Institute,[2] who participated in a study that led to the report, A Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm, a paper prepared for Likud party leader and then-incoming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.” -Wikipedia.org.

“…A Clean Break…” Swede, are you still there? Are you getting this? “…these wars are against your freedom, they are against you.” See: Above post, paragraph 1.

    • Big Swede

Typical, when you can’t defend the message you attack the messenger.

      • Swede, people “attack” you because you are impenetrable, never leaving the safe bounds of your hatred while parroting trusted sources. I’ve come to suspect that you have very little reading comprehension, and certainly no ability to think properly.

        • Big Swede

          Lets make this about me.

Deflection as a debate attic. The gist of this post is genocide. Please inform me which race is intent on wiping the other out. Jews or Palis?

Address the treatment of Palis that reside in Israel, address the Palis that hold office and that are appointed judges. Address the fact that the IDF could wipe every one of these haters out in a short war.

Just who is being impenetrable? Who’s intent is genocide?

  5. Suggestion is a large part of American “news,” and all of this talk of wiping out “Hamas,” which Americans are typically ignorance about in total, is having an effect, bringing the possibility of a huge massacre out into the open. Loos talk about getting rid if them, wiping them out, desensitizes Americans to the possibility that hundreds of thousands of innocent people might be murdered.

“Give a dog a bad name, and hang him.” (German saying)

  6. steve kelly

Swede, sorry you didn’t take the time to read any of what I posted. That was not an attack. I overloaded you. And I mean it when I say: “…these wars are against your freedom…..against you.” We have that in common. When you see that we, together, can rid the U.S. and world of much of the psychotic plague that perpetuates constant war and a perpetual war economy.

Let me try to keep this simple: Hamas — another CIA/Mossad “color revolution” — was funded and encouraged by Israel and CIA to weaken Fatah. Now, who else do we know that was funded by CIA, and later assassinated as “terrorists?” Our terrorists! Sadam? Osama? Noriega? Morsi? Need I go on?

Please read one book, if you haven’t already: 1984.
I’ll keep trying because you are key to dethroning the powers that be.

    • Ever lie awake at night wondering if all these little conspiracies are fabricated in order to keep you from real intentions?

      • Swede, we are at odds here not because we do not see your side. We do. We are very familiar with the arguments and talking points of the American right wing, news and entertainment media, which is all your attitudes reflect. You need not bring it to us.

What is most unnerving about you, the reason people get short, is the degree of ignorance of the bigger picture coupled with your certainty that you know it all.

        • What is so aggravating is the fact that I quote scholars and learned individuals who have spent their lives studying and living among these people in the middle east. I bring you examples and quotations of political leaders to enforce my points. And yet you with little knowledge, no footnotes, trump all that is said.

Who made you God? You’re nothing but a two bit accountant collectivist code pinko hack.

          • What is so aggravating is that you do not see that the world is bigger than the “scholars and learned individuals” you choose to trust. There are scholars and learned individual on all sides of these questions. It is never that simple. We can all bring them to bear. In the end, our own judgment, flavored by our prejudice, determines our viewpoints.

  7. Craig Moore

Lizard, quoting out of context is no measure of your intentions to avoid a blog war. Why do that?????

James’ preceding sentence was, ” Hamas can end this right now by standing down, surrendering its weapons, renouncing violence, and embracing the right of Israel to exist in peace and prosperity. ”

You made a choice to select verbiage to fit your meme. If you are truly interested in not having a blog war, do as James suggested, stand down and stop the provocations.

    • JC

Craig, this wasn’t liz’s post, it was mine. And, no the quote wasn’t taken out of context. Conner and others are issuing ultimatums: surrender or be destroyed. During asymmetrical warfare, when one side does that to the other, it is a war crime to threaten genocide.

Do you agree with Conner and the others that if Hamas doesn’t unilaterally surrender that “Israel has the right, need, and duty to destroy Hamas”?

Just want to know where you stand.

      • Craig Moore

Sorry, I saw Lizard’s commentary and made a mistake. However, you did take him out of context with the selective quote.

Hamas and the Palestinians are not conflatable. Hamas’ terrorist strikes ARE criminal since they do not take orders from nor serve at the direction of an established and legitimate government. Their missile attacks are indiscriminate and are meant to negotiate from a position of terror. When criminals with weapons threaten and use those weapons the police and military authorities have both the right and obligation to protect their citizens and extinguish those criminals who point their weapons at the innocent. So yes, criminals MUST put down their weapons or face the deadly consequence of resisting suppression of their violence.

        • JC

Did you not notice that I did not conflate Palestinians with Hamas? And contrary to your position, Hamas is the duly elected government of the Gazans.

And for “legitimate governments”, how about Israel? Where are their borders? And do you not see some of Israels actions as war crimes? Many other countries and organizations due. Just because during asymmetrical warfare the country with the huge military advantage says and does things does not make it right.

Can we hold the Israeli criminals to the same standard you want to pin on Hamas?

And you still didn’t answer my question to you, and the central thesis of this blog post: do you believe genocide is permissible for the Israelis to commit upon the Palestinians in Gaza?

  8. steve kelly

So, Craig, please explain to me how all Palestinians must suffer “collective punishment” for the actions of Hamas — the essential element that makes it genocide. Without CIA/Mossad, there is no Hamas, no? How convenient if total destruction of Palestine and Palestinians — and beyond that the fragmentation of the whole ME — is the vision, mission and goal of Mossad/Lakud/neocons. There is evidence in the links I offer if you care to comment.

    • Craig Moore

Steve, if I took the time to debate you about the Hamas criminals hiding in Gaza among the innocent it would do no good as your mind is made up. IF I said I agreed with you, I would be lying and we both would be wrong.

      • Steve W

So the fact that Hamas is the creation if the US and Israeli intelligence services makes no difference, yet again?

You are easily duped, Craig. You know, after Noriega, Saddam, Bin Ladin I just assume we use these guys to invade and control.

Yet once again, you can’t even see it. Amazing!

I thought debate was supposed to happen between people whose minds were already made up, examining and criticizing each others ideas and assumptions.

My guess is you won’t debate Steve Kelly because he would kick your ass in a debate. :)

        • Craig Moore

Your ass has been chaffing ever since I caught you using another clone name on DU a few years back. You posted the same comment at DU that you posted on another blog using another name. You never got over it.

          • Steve W

i just wondered why you are afraid to go mano a mano or human to human with Steve Kelly. The reason you gave makes zero sense. Look at what you wrote and think, “Does that make any sense?”

I’m guessing that you know you haven’t a leg to stand on but that still doesn’t stop you from pretending to be able bodied.

Since the US created, trained, funded, and enabled Manuel Noriega, Saddam Hussain, Hamas, and Osama bin Laudin I have to assume all these goings on aren’t mere coincidence.

            What do you assume?

(by the way, i completely forgot that you`found out my du posting/membership handle/name was John Q Citizen. I didn’t care then nor do I now. But it was a good earnest attempt at diversion and not addressing the point of my post, I’ll give you that Craig.)

        • Hope you get around to discussing SK’s point, Craig, that Hamas was a product of Israeli and American intelligence, who wanted to be rid of Yassir Arafat, an effective leader.

Please deal with it directly. It’s a valid point, well understood in the bigger world outside the US propaganda bubble.

  9. steve kelly

Craig, I believe am much less certain about what’s happening in Gaza than you think, and would enjoy comparing notes when you are ready.

  10. James Maxie

“I can forgive you for killing my boys, but I can never forgive you for making our boys kill yours.” – Golda Meir

    • Nobody makes Israelis bomb hospitals and schools. They do that all on apt heir own, their own private Idaho kind of psychotic killing spree, and not the fault of the victims.

  11. steve kelly

Netanyahoo is no Meir! The Meir era predates the current “New World Order” doctrine announced by H.W. Bush September 11, 1990. http://www.voltairenet.org/article30217.html

If Israel’s objective is really “protecting its citizens from Palestinian rocket fire,” why then did it pursue the following policies currently in effect: 1) Unilaterally broke ceasefire with Hamas, 2) reinstitute collective punish of all Palestinians for electing Hamas in 2006 elections, 3) continue the occupation of the West Bank, 4) begin blockade-occupation of Gaza, and 5) continue to expand Zionist settlements on fragmented patches of historic Palestine not already seized, bulldozed and covered by new settlement homes?

If this happened in your neighborhood, what would be your response? And remember, there is no where to run and take up life as a refugee.

Craig, Swede, James Maxie, please note: This is a question.

  12. Of deepening concern are offhand comments I encounter about the death and destruction being visited on Palestinians (cluster bombs, phosphorus, targeting of hospitals and schools and civilians in general are considered war crimes among civilized people). People speak as if Israelis are defending themselves, and the Meir comment above is classic psychopathic projection of blame on the victim. (Golda was a psychopath, it appears.) Palestinians have become “Hamas” and “Hamas,” a political party and social support network, has become the face of “terrorism.” It is classic a propaganda technique used to dehumanize people so that killing them is regarded as normal behavior among normal people.

The whole place is an insane asylum, and it apparent at this point that they are bent on committing a massacre. Normal decent people who stand and watch cannot be excused for refusing to hold leadership accountable.

  13. mike

Meir was a psychopath…please…you stating this removes you from the realm of a reasonable person in this discussion.

Anyone purporting that the CIA or Mossad was responsible for Hamas is also clearly delusional.

The Palestinians have a lot of human capital and I’m sure a lot of very intelligent individuals, if they backed off the we have to kill all the Jews meme, perhaps a collaboration would be in order, shit like jobs and prosperity for the citizens in Gaza.

Israel has a good economy, sadly Hamas has chose to not let this possible good for their populace take hold and went back to kill the Jews, it’s a losing proposition for them.

When Hamas exists solely to portray the destruction of Israel and uses propoganda to fill their kids with this type of hate there isn’t much hope.

I’d hope the progtards that hang out here could see the difference, given that they hate capitalism I doubt it.

James Conner of Flatheadmemo is in the pocket of his local Rabbi so he basically posts from a very distorted and biased place. He is not above totally misrepresenting facts either. Just this week he indicated a counter protest had “armed” participants because he was able to get a blurry photo of someone walking by with an open carry gun which is not only legal in Montana but very common.
