The least of his transgressions

by Pete Talbot

Hypocrites are the worst. Sen. Larry Craig railing against gays and then trying to get sex in a Twin Cities airport men’s room. Rep. Mark Foley, chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children, who sends sexually explicit emails to House pages. Conservative Sen. David Vitter and S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford … and on and on.

So Sen. Max Baucus pales in comparison. He’s never been an in-your-face family values guy. And if the time line he lays out is true, his indiscretion occurred while both parties were separated from their respective spouses.

But still, to advance the name of your lover for Montana’s U.S. Attorney? To quote a Washington Post columnist: “boneheaded.”

In some respects, this scandal is almost refreshing. Hey, Max is a human being, not just an automaton for the banking, insurance and health care industries. You see, I hold Max accountable for much more egregious behavior:

– His lame health care bill (Howard Dean called it “the worst piece of health care legislation I’ve seen in 30 years.”).

– His vote to repeal the estate tax.

– His cop out on cap-and-trade.

– His Bush tax-cuts-for-the-rich.

– His Medicare prescription drug vote.

– His “aye” on the bankruptcy bill.

– His Iraq War complacency.

– His 70 percent approval rating from the Chamber of Commerce.

All the while saying he’s doing “what’s right for Montana.”

So this latest is just the icing on the cake. And it’s another slap in the face to Montanans.

(UPDATE: Daily Kos sheds some more light on the subject. Hat tip to David Crisp at Billings Blog.)

  1. Lizard

why does tiger woods suddenly spring to mind?

oh yeah, because our lovely media is more interested in the hole he sinks his balls into instead of his ties with chevron and dubai.

  2. Big Swede

    Pete, ya missed one.

    – His vote against drilling, when his ranch drills.

  3. Big Swede

    How ’bout this one.

    – His covering up back room deals.

    – His great debate skills.

Gotta give you the “great debate skills.” A Max speech can clear a room faster than a stink bomb.

But remember, Swede, the times I get upset with Max is when he acts like a Republican — you know, lobbyist influenced legislation, a weak environmental record and a lack of empathy for working Montanans.

He’s head and shoulders above that do-nothing U.S. Representative out of Billings. You know the one I’m talking about.

  4. Turner

Baucus needs to be primaried, if he chooses to run again in 2014. Schweitzer, maybe?

As for Rehberg, he may or may not have been unfaithful to his wife. He’s drunk so often, how can he be sure?

As the congressional election nears, we’ll see how popular he remains. When his pro-big-business, anti-Montanan voting record becomes better known, all but the most ignorant rednecks will desert him.

  5. Jim Lang

Melodee was the best person “on his staff”.

  6. ladybug

Perfect pick for Baucus, someone he could control, overpower. And like so many twisted relationships in Wash. D.C., she might have had the goodies on him too. Perfect symbiosis, no?

  7. problembear

that’s like saying Bozo is king of the clowns….in other words, jim, that ain’t sayin’ much. for the past 20 years or so i have found max’s staff distant and very unhelpful to the general public.

but then, the dog always takes on the bone-headed behavior of its master.

  8. This is just another layer on Max’s douche cake. Time to go Gozzlehead.
