Look no further than to the home of my forefathers. Weekly Standard article.
“MARRIAGE IS SLOWLY DYING IN SCANDINAVIA. A majority of children in Sweden and Norway are born out of wedlock. Sixty percent of first-born children in Denmark have unmarried parents. Not coincidentally, these countries have had something close to full gay marriage for a decade or more. Same-sex marriage has locked in and reinforced an existing Scandinavian trend toward the separation of marriage and parenthood. The Nordic family pattern–including gay marriage–is spreading across Europe. And by looking closely at it we can answer the key empirical question underlying the gay marriage debate. Will same-sex marriage undermine the institution of marriage? It already has.
More precisely, it has further undermined the institution. The separation of marriage from parenthood was increasing; gay marriage has widened the separation. Out-of-wedlock birthrates were rising; gay marriage has added to the factors pushing those rates higher. Instead of encouraging a society-wide return to marriage, Scandinavian gay marriage has driven home the message that marriage itself is outdated, and that virtually any family form, including out-of-wedlock parenthood, is acceptable.”

Can’t see the A to B to C there. Gay marriages have been happening for a decade. First born children are now more often being born to unmarried couples. Therefore, A caused B.
Not.

Kurtz connects the dots toward the end of the article.

Actually no, Ingemar, Kurtz does not connect the dots. Or rather, he connects some dots, but not logically.
For one thing, he gives numerous possible alternative explanations in the article for why marriage is on the decline but fails to rule them out. Without ruling out these alternatives, he can’t logically chalk this up to gay marriage.
He also ignores the fact that in the United States, marriage was on the decline WELL before gay marriage ever became politically viable.
But in fact, none of that matters. Individuals’ rights to make mutually consensual contracts between themselves and have them recognized on an equal basis with all other human beings trumps “society’s” right to discriminate against them for purposes of social engineering.

well said kirsten. and i would like to add that most montanans like to mind our own damn business when it comes to personal freedoms.
you are accurately accusing right wing religious fanatics of discriminating against individuals for purposes of social engineering when they oppose gay marriage. nice observation.
i would like to see mr swede explain how a so called freedom loving conservative like him explains to libertarian thinking montanans just how he justifies his point of view………
oh, that’s right…….. homophobia!

“Will same-sex marriage undermine the institution of marriage?”
I think that when marriage is looked at as an “institution” that its undermining has been going on for a long time.

Exactly what the Romans said.
“Speech of the censor Quintus Caecilius Metellus Macedonicus [16] about the law requiring men to marry in order to produce children. According to Livy (Per. 59), in 17 B.C. Augustus read out this speech, which seemed “written for the hour”, in the Senate in support of his own legislation encouraging marriage and childbearing (see no. 121). “If we could survive without a wife, citizens of Rome, all of us would do without that nuisance; but since nature has so decreed that we cannot manage comfortably with them, nor live in any way without them, [17] we must plan for our lasting preservation rather than for our temporary pleasure.

still curious to know what your neighbor is doing in his bedroom huh swede?
and citing roman law?
are you sure you are still a republican. i would check the original handbook again if i were you bs. i think policing what people do in their homes falls under the category of asking the government to infringe on personal liberty.
medical marijuana, women’s right to choose, assisted suicide, forbidding individuals to marry….. the GOP rabidly denies all these freedoms. where are the real republicans who stand up for personal liberty instead of government coercion?

[This is good]
Swede, the Scandinavian countries remain among the highest in standard of living. It is simply a truth that if an institution is no longer serving a viable purpose, it isn’t worth supporting.
June 24, 2011 at 7:54 pm
Sadly, true.
When the govt. becomes the parents and providers the institution falters.
Till finally someone offers us a choice.
Red pill or blue?
June 24, 2011 at 7:55 pm
i think that more Repugs will come out of the closet and get married – another thing that might happen is All the Bibles/babels in the world will erupt into Flammmmme !!! yeaaaaaaaaa and the world will end- Ta Dah
June 25, 2011 at 8:27 pm
If gay marriage is inevitable and just then Tester should use it in his re-election campaign.
June 25, 2011 at 10:16 pm
Swede, I think you would be surprised how well that would play with many moderates and independants – especially given Rehberg’s often demonstrated homophobia. It would be plus for him in my book.
June 26, 2011 at 11:50 am
Haha! Gay marriage in New York brought to you courtesy of…
wait for it…
…rich, libertarianish Republicans. :-)
