of all the crazy tea party bills seeping through the walls of our state capitol these days, MT state Senator Debbie Barrett from Dillon takes the insanity prize for going up against Montana’s long tradition of stream access for all its citizens.

dysfunctional debbie and some guy named wellburn have cozied up to the most politically blind organizations and individuals in montana to conspire to take away a right to our rivers and streams that all montanans take for granted.

this guy says it better than i can.

it seems that this has been a long long long game this session… and it doesn’t look like it’ll end soon.

for all their trash talk this session, the Surly Teaparty Loungers seem to be waning a bit in the bottom of the 20th inning. so far, they have scored one on 15 hits and left 22 bills on base. The plucky New Young Montanans, while out-numbered, inexperienced and somewhat error-prone, are taking the game one inning at a time and gaining momentum. the crowd is turning against the Teaparty and it doesn’t look good for the Loungers with pinch hitter brian schweitzer batting clean-up.

time for all of us to get hold of our representatives and gov brian schweitzer and tell them to veto all of the above…..

then let’s all set out some folding chairs for those loungers. they look a little dejected.

We first wrote about Montana’s HD Rep. Joe Read a few weeks ago. Read, as you may recall, has proposed a bill – HB549 – that says that global warming is good for Montana.

The Colbert Report’s Stephen Colbert picked up on Read’s bill, and did a really nice segment the other night.

Who doesn’t love Tip of the Hat, Wag of the Finger?

Since I wouldn’t know how to embed this, please enjoy this segment that begins with the words “Opinions are like assholes, in that I have more than most people.”

Love this, from Stephen: “OK, it’s law now. A reasonable amount of CO2 – which means any amount produced in Montana – has no verifiable effect on global warming. Just as a reasonable amount of science has no verifiable effect on Joe Read.”

Fortunately, the House Natural Resources has the good sense to table the thing. Wish I knew the vote.
